Quick Verdict

Typeform remains the reference point for forms that people actually enjoy completing, and its newer lead-capture layer (scoring, routing, enrichment, follow-ups) makes it a legitimate front door for inbound GTM — not just a pretty survey tool. The trade is economic: response-capped pricing with a hard stop at the cap means you're renting elegance, and a successful campaign can take your own forms offline. Choose it when brand experience and qualification logic drive revenue directly (high-intent lead capture, quizzes, sales intake); choose Jotform or Tally when volume per dollar, a real free tier, or payment-gateway breadth matters more.

Overview

Typeform, founded in Barcelona in 2012 by two designers frustrated that every web form felt like paperwork, built its name on a single interaction idea: ask one question at a time, in a conversation, instead of presenting a wall of fields. That idea turned a form builder into a brand — Typeform is, as Zapier's roundup puts it, "synonymous with conversational forms." The company has since raised roughly $187M (Series C led by Sofina in 2022), serves 150,000+ businesses collecting 48M+ responses a month, and has expanded beyond form-building into Growth Flow (automated enrichment and follow-up of captured leads) and Research Flow (AI-moderated research studies). For a sales/GTM audience, the relevant framing is that Typeform has quietly repositioned itself from "beautiful surveys" to "the front door of your inbound funnel": AI lead-qualification mode, lead scoring, automated routing, contact enrichment, and email/SMS follow-ups are now core product, not afterthoughts.

What it does

The product spans three jobs:

  • Collect. The builder supports conversational one-question-per-screen layouts or multi-question form pages, with question types including video/audio answers, file uploads (1–4 GB by tier), e-signature, payments (Stripe and PayPal, now with Google Pay/Apple Pay), and scheduler questions tied to Calendly or Google Calendar. AI can generate a form from a prompt or import an existing document/form. Hidden fields and URL variables carry campaign/UTM context into the response so CRM records arrive with attribution intact.
  • Qualify and route. Typeform's logic layer is the deepest in the category: branching, hidden questions/answer choices, variables, price/score calculations, scoring quizzes, outcome/match quizzes, and a Workflow panel that chains multiple forms and endings. Lead-qualification mode uses AI to generate a qualification form and score respondents; lead scoring and tags plus automated routing send high-fit leads to the right owner. Business-tier analytics add drop-off rates and conversion tracking so you can see where the funnel leaks.
  • Act on the data. Responses flow to HubSpot, Pipedrive, or Salesforce (Business+), to sheets and data tools, or anywhere via signed webhooks, a REST API (2 req/s per account), and Zapier/Make/n8n. Growth Flow adds automatic contact enrichment (vendor-claimed match rates of up to 92% B2B / 71% B2C), AI "Smart Insights" analysis, and branded email/SMS follow-ups — effectively a lightweight marketing-automation layer grafted onto the form.

Pricing

Typeform prices per account tier with monthly response caps, not per seat: Free (10 responses/mo), Basic $29/mo annual / $39 monthly (100 responses, 1 user), Plus $50/$79 (1,000 responses, 3 users), Business $83/$129 (10,000 responses, 5 users), and Growth Flow $266/$379 (10,000 responses plus enrichment, automations, and follow-ups). Enterprise and Growth Custom are quoted. Annual billing saves roughly 30–35%.

The structure matters more than the sticker. Responses are counted account-wide (not per form), unused responses don't roll over, and add-on packs can raise the ceiling to a documented maximum (e.g., 750 on Basic, 2,500 on Plus). When an account hits 100% of its limit, every form switches to Private mode and stops accepting submissions until the month resets or you upgrade — deleting responses does not free quota. Auto-upgrade can raise your tier automatically (and at renewal you're billed at the higher annual rate). September 2024's repricing — free plan cut from 100 to 10 responses, Basic up 34%, Business roughly doubled — is still the dominant theme in Trustpilot reviews (1.3/5) and a visible minority of G2/Capterra feedback.

Weaknesses

  • The response cap is a live grenade. Hitting the cap mid-campaign takes all forms offline with no overage option; a source that outperforms expectations can cost you actual leads. Budget headroom or a second form destination accordingly.
  • Cost per response is poor at low tiers. $39/month for 100 responses ($0.39/response) compares badly with Jotform (2,500 submissions at $39) or Tally (unlimited on a free tier). Typeform's premium buys experience, not volume.
  • Trust deficit from the 2024 repricing. The free plan went from usable to demo-only, pricing jumped sharply, and support/cancellation complaints recur on Trustpilot. G2's rating (4.5) is far kinder than Trustpilot's — weigh both.
  • Tier-gating of basics. Salesforce on Business+ only, CAPTCHA on top tiers, one theme per form, no custom CSS/JS, and paid add-ons (e.g., ~$25/mo Automations on Plus) make the effective bill unpredictable.
  • Payments limited to Stripe/PayPal — a real constraint for merchants on other processors.
  • AI features are uneven. Users report the AI form generator rewriting or dropping questions and misordering them; treat AI output as a draft, not a deliverable.

Verdict

Typeform is the tool to pick when the form is the brand experience and qualification logic is revenue-critical — high-intent inbound capture, interactive quizzes, sales intake, paid funnels. Its logic layer and lead-capture stack are genuinely ahead of the category, and the integration surface fits a modern CRM-centric stack without friction. It's the wrong tool when volume per dollar, a real free tier, offline-tolerant pricing, or payment-processor breadth matters more — that's Jotform, Tally, or Fillout territory. If you do adopt it: monitor response usage against campaign calendars, keep auto-upgrade deliberately on or off (and know what it does to annual renewal), and dedupe on the receiving side (especially Pipedrive), since repeat submitters can create duplicate records.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • ✓ Category-defining respondent experience: one-question-at-a-time conversational UI with strong completion-rate reputation
  • ✓ Deep, genuinely useful logic layer (branching, variables, calculations, scoring, outcome quizzes, visual logic map) that competitors bolt on crudely
  • ✓ Lead-capture-specific capabilities few form builders match: AI lead-qualification mode, lead scoring, routing, enrichment (Growth Flow), and SMS/email follow-ups
  • ✓ Solid developer surface: documented REST APIs, signed webhooks with explicit retry policy, plus Zapier/Make/n8n reach
  • ✓ Polished templates, brand kit/subdomain options, and embedding modes that keep forms on-brand
  • ✓ Mature company: founded 2012 in Barcelona, ~$187M raised, 150,000+ customers, 48M+ responses/month

Limitations

  • ✗ Pricing-to-value is the most common complaint: low response caps mean real lead volume quickly forces Plus/Business at $50-$83+/mo, and cost per response looks poor next to Jotform or Tally
  • ✗ The hard-stop on forms at the response cap is dangerous for campaigns — a viral post can take your lead capture offline mid-surge, and deleting responses doesn't free quota
  • ✗ Aggressive 2024 repricing burned trust; support and cancellation/billing complaints recur on Trustpilot
  • ✗ Advanced features increasingly gated behind tiers and add-ons, making the effective bill hard to predict
  • ✗ AI form generator gets mixed marks from users (question rewrites/ordering issues)

Integrations

HubSpot Salesforce Pipedrive Zapier Make n8n Clay (via Zapier) Google Sheets Airtable Slack Mailchimp Google Calendar Calendly Stripe PayPal Google Analytics 4 Google Tag Manager Meta Pixel Notion Google Ads

Use Cases

  • Capture and qualify inbound leads with conversational forms that score and route respondents automatically, then push to HubSpot/Salesforce or trigger sequences via Zapier/Clay.
  • Run interactive quizzes and product-recommendation/match experiences that double as lead magnets, with payments and scheduling embedded at the point of highest intent.
  • Replace static contact/quote forms on marketing sites: hidden fields pass UTM/campaign data into the CRM record, and partial-response capture recovers abandons.
  • Build multi-step funnels (landing quiz → qualification form → booking/payment → follow-up email) in one no-code Workflow without engineering support.

Who Should Use Typeform?

Best for

  • ✓Marketers who want forms that look on-brand and convert measurably better than flat web forms
  • ✓Lead-gen teams using quizzes/scoring to qualify inbound volume before it hits sales
  • ✓Teams already on HubSpot, Pipedrive, or Salesforce that need responses mapped into CRM automatically
  • ✓Solo operators and SMBs that want payments, scheduling, and file capture inside one form

Not ideal for

  • —Very high-volume data collection on a budget — response caps make cost per response poor versus Jotform or Tally
  • —Teams needing a predictable free tier (10 responses/month is a demo, not a tool)
  • —Use cases requiring CAPTCHA/bot protection on lower tiers, HIPAA-grade forms outside Enterprise, or custom CSS/JS
  • —Merchants needing payment gateways beyond Stripe/PayPal (no Square, Authorize.net, regional processors)
